Where will my interest in reading and writing take me?

I see my interest in reading and writing hopefully taking me around the world and back. I want to be able to support my family from the writings that I find to come from my passionate views on life, love, relationships, cultures, beliefs and music. I hope my future will enable me to inherit a title of writer, producer, and best selling author. I want to be a reader that can come across books in the local bookstores, random readers hands and or top 12 listing in the New York Times. 

I have already begun to approach readings in a different manner than previously. I tend to leave an open mind. Learn to not judge a book by its cover. I learned to identify themes, styles, and classic characteristics of authors. I am so impressed with my ability to identify theses qualities that sometimes I scare myself with the knowledge of knowing.

So far the writers that I consider to the best all have different styles of writing and a suppose that's what interest me the most. In this particular class I have read various novels from graphic, plays, book of poems, and fiction/ non-fiction. It definitely has been a learning experience to decipher a poem to 3 to 5 pages or write 3 to 5 pages about why you chose to major in English. Initially I thought this is simple and no sweat but when everyone really look at their lives from another perspective the view changes.

My personal connection to literature was revealed to me years ago when I adapted the art of journalling. Later I thought to extend my connection so I would be able to learn the uncut truth of my history from others close to me eyes. I recently lost a woman very dear to me, my grandmother at the age of 91. But before she died I found the journal I had given her to several years ago to tell me about her and my grandfather, and of course my mother. Not knowing she had really took my request seriously but she did. I read every word she had written and learn so much about her that losing her body only helped me gain her Spiritually. Because with the handwritten words I have placed by bed I can always see, hear, and smell the scent of her. 

Pop Culture

Some critics would say that this new Pop Culture has gone too far or just plain Madd. And sometimes I'm on the fence with the belief. After watching Curb Your Euthusasium for the first time in class I was entertained not offended. Or not with this episode. I have noticed that hollywood an america are the same person. A white man. I say this not to become racial be I say observant. I have been a fond television viewer now for decades. I have watched loved and entertained by numerous shows through the years. I have seen other shows with the same concept but different characters. But this show may be more acceptable to me because of the diverse characters all being able to voice their "what people really think" views. I like the concept of Impromtu monologue. That's brilliant itself. I can't be upset with the racial make up of the cast because the creator is the key to any cast. The show addresses social, economic, racial, spiritual, and human / humane issues that are not always discussed in everyones' home. This could be an educational tool for those families that still live in a "box". Go outside the box, explore other worlds, people, cultures, and beliefs maybe you will not be offended by CYE.

This goes back to my theory that america and hollywood is the same person "A White Man". 

Elizabeth Bishop

I really admired some of her poem styles. The techniques she choose to write where so amazing to me, like the Sestina style. I was so  amaze at how a person can really focus on the endings to a sentence, phrase or stanza to form this style. I really thought the style was overwhelming to the novice poet such as myself. I tired to place myself in the mind of Bishop to see if I would grasp any conceptual thoughts to begin to write a Sestina.

Her poem "Crusoe in England" is theme of describing the world, emotional crisis and past experiences. We were told that her poems were not labeled as personal experience. But I differ with that revelation. I believe if one is writing from their mind their will definitely be personal views attached, webbed into, and delivered throughout the work. Your mind can't be unbias. She describes places she has been mentally. She reveals her various relationships that were not public. She uses metaphors and talks about being in exile. 

After reading her poems in Geography III I have learned a lot about Bishop without her being explicit. I've learned that she was in a homosexual relationship that she keep sacred but at the same time felt as she was living in exile because during the time this type of relationship was not accepted as it would be today.

I admire any person be that man or woman to tech one the style of writing through the eyes of their world.

The Moviegoer

This book was written by Walker Percy. It was his first novel, his most famous novel and critically acclaimed novel. I found the character Binx and myself sort of paralleling in one sense or another. we both are from Southern cities. Both felt a sense of alienation. And of course both have family problems or as we say nowadays "Defunctional". 

Even though he felt as though he really didn't belong to a set of friends or community. I differ from that in my life. I have great deal of love and vice verse from my friends but can't same the same for my family. I notice the christian imagery throughout the novel. It is very clear that Percy is a devout catholic and the setting of New Orleans help to depict the theme. By the city known for the huge catholic families. The southern tradtitions that's in the novel are priceless as any tradition from the south.  I can truly relate to those desires to keep the traditions going and search to find yourself. Regardless of what others tend to believe self motivation can and will keep you sane.

King Lear

I may be the only person that found the moral theme in this reading. Even though this work has not been named as having any Christianity themes. My interpretation from the very beginning was that of a man asking one to "Merciful". King Lear initial actions shows that of of a hurt or heartbroken man from the hands of the daughter whom if obviously had "the" unconditional love for. Most or all parents have this unconditional or undying love for their children. It may have been more evident among one daughter than all three. 

Lear was a perfect example of the Christian teaching "honour thou mother and thou father". Christians believe that if you commit this sin you will have Hell to pay. Lear's two eldest daughters practically abandoned their father mentally and physically all for power. This power could only be given by the almighty not by a person. They soon learned from it. 

In the end Lear ask for forgiveness another image of Christianity. He humbled himself to his daughter in return she truly loved as well as forgave her father for his harsh words of threat to the Gods on her behalf.

Persepolis the Film

I really was impressed by the continuity the film offered to the novel. I really thought its was produced greatly. Like most novels made to film you have embellishments and omitted scenes to films. But think overall the film gave me a even more detailed prospective with a desire to educate myself further of the history of this country and the people who descend from it.

I was consumed by the imagery from this film as most as from a modern day war adaptation piece. The black and white made the open-ness for human imagination of the thought of blood and death that's always so very colorful.

Persepolis

Why can't we call it what it is? If it walks like a duck its a duck, if it quacks like a duck, then its a duck. This by far is one of the greatest Memoirs I've read. I've not read many besides my grandmothers to name some. This book has really educated me more on America's continued display of destruction of others well being or culture. I have knowledge of a country and it's people world literally crumbling. I admire the visual effects shown in the book. I had never read a graphic novel that had so much passion, courage, insight, and vulnerability. I thought this was an absolutely brilliant piece of work that has allowed several cultures, races, generations, and classes to become knowledgeable from a young woman's honest, uncensored, naive, and concerned voice.
I would ask a question to other readers of this novel. Place the shoe on their foot. If you published the journals that have helped you overcome abuse, addiction, abandonment or discrimination you would be writing from your point of view. What you have seen, heard, and felt everything coming from the heart.
I don't agree with some critics who think that she shouldn't voice her views of America or about her country as well. But they need to realize that this was her own view from Her Living there not researching but actually being there during the Revolution and demise of her culture.

The Glengarry Glen Ross Book

Some would become offended by the language used in this play. Well of course I was not. I see myself as the minority in several aspects of the world. The language used is something I have been accustom to because of the line of work I'm in. In the area of employment Men are the majority. Therefore, I have been in contact with the Roma's who are arrogant, manipulative, and out for self. The roles of these characters are what I think are of the characteristics of most modern day, working, typical corporate men. You have those owners that treat their employees as children or pets by creating "Motivational Projects" for the employees to compete with each other and allow the head of heads to see who has more guts or balls. The play shows those outside the corporate arena how it really goes down for the Mighty Dollar.
Regardless of the true language given its reality. Men are men in their own environment and we have just been a fly on the wall of their world. Mamet shows how if a man works for the well being of his family and works honestly but hard its not Man Enough.
He also shows that its in a man to compete at all cost as long as its he who wins in the end. Makes the notion that men are selfish or self centered when successful. Well are they? Look at all our Furtune 500 Men, how many true friends do they have? Are all of them business associates?
